Review

I grew up in the era of flimsy wire music stands, and I think part of me is still anxious at the thought of having my music stand collapse and music fly everywhere. Finding a reliable and portable music stand has been a game-changer when I need to travel with a music stand. Although I still use a music stand with a solid desk in my personal practice studio, the KraftGeek Capsule Music Stand has become my new on-the-go music stand when I travel.

What I appreciate most about this music stand is how light, compact, and portable it is, which is really great since clarinetists already have so many accessories (double case, reeds, music, accessories, etc.). Even though it is lightweight, it is still quite sturdy and supports all of my music. (I even tested to see if it would crumble under the pressure of the hefty Klosé Celebrated Method for Clarinet, and it was fine!)

I still use sheet music instead of a tablet, and I really like the built-in stand clips to help keep the music in place. Since the desk doesn’t have a solid back (a trade-off for portability), I just pack a sturdy piece of cardboard to prop behind my music, and voilà – problem solved!

The stand is quick and easy to set up and adjust, and it has a wide range of heights to allow for performance while sitting or standing. I even gave it a little shake to test its stability, and I’m happy to report it held its ground. (Clarinetists – you still should never place your mouthpiece on a music stand!) I even DIY-ed it into a portable tripod by lowering the music stand and placing it on a table to film using the FlexyMount (more on that below).

Setting up the stand is super easy—no complicated assembly. It adjusts quickly for sitting or standing positions, and the height range is versatile enough for different performance setups. I even gave it a little shake to see if it would topple over, and I’m happy to report it held its ground. I also got creative and turned it into a portable tripod by lowering it and placing it on a table, which worked great for filming!

Accessories

KraftGeek also sent me their FlexyMount and Lumi Light to test with the stand. Although I don’t play often in many dark environments (besides the occasional pit orchestra), this would be a very useful accessory if you frequently use a stand light.

One of my goals this year has been to create more video content, and having the FlexyMount drastically improved my filming setup. Before the FlexyMount, I would prop my phone on a pile of music, and several good takes have been ruined since it kept falling over. The FlexyMount is suitable for phones (and tablets), and I use this for both filming content and using my tuner/metronome apps while I practice.

As I mentioned above, I even created a “tripod” by lowering the stand to its lowest height and placing it on a table to film some content.

Final thoughts

Having a reliable and easily portable music stand is important for musicians. I’d recommend the KraftGeek Capsule Music Stand to any musician at any level who needs a lightweight and dependable music stand for rehearsals, performances, or travels.
