Are you allergic to the clarinet?

Although this might sound like a weak excuse to get out of band class, it is possible to experience allergies to some of the clarinet’s components.

Here’s how you can be allergic to the clarinet:

(Just a reminder – I am a classically trained clarinetist and not a medical doctor. If you experience any concerning symptoms while playing clarinet, please consult a trained health care professional.)

If you’ve recently started playing clarinet or changed a piece of equipment and notice redness, itchiness, rashes, or other symptoms of an allergic reaction, you might be allergic to something on your clarinet. The most likely culprits are nickel (on the keys or ligature) or reeds.

Nickel allergies

If you are sensitive or allergic to nickel, you should avoid nickel-plated keys on the clarinet. There are several models with silver keys, and more companies are adding models with keys in a variety of metals. Also check to make sure that your ligature is not nickel. If so, try other materials such as fabric, leather, or synthetic.

Reed allergies

According to this study, people with allergies or sensitivities to grass pollen are more likely to be sensitive or allergic to clarinet reeds. This is because reeds are made from cane (Arundo donax), which has some similarities to grass pollen.

If you experience any swelling, rashes, redness, or other symptoms, try using a different brand of reed. If you still experience these symptoms with other cane reeds, there are a variety of synthetic reeds available. Learn more about cane vs. synthetic clarinet reeds here.)

If you suspect you might be allergic to any component of your clarinet, try to isolate pieces of equipment to find the culprit. We are fortunate to have a wide variety of clarinet equipment and accessories companies, and you should have no problem finding an alternative piece of equipment that allows you to play without activating your allergies!
