You got a new clarinet! Now what?
Just got a new clarinet? Congratulations!
Whether this is your first time playing clarinet or you’ve recently upgraded your clarinet, here are some things to consider after you get a new clarinet:
- Record the serial number. Keep track of all your instruments’ serial numbers in a safe place. (I keep both written and digital.)
- Make sure it’s insured. Keep all receipts and proof of sales, and be sure to add this clarinet to your insurance policy (homeowner, tenant, musical instrument, or other policy) to make sure it’s covered if something happens.
- Break it in carefully. If you have a wood clarinet, it is imperative to break it in so you decrease the risk of cracks. Here’s my guide on breaking in new wood clarinets.
- Does your clarinet have silver keys? If so, don’t store a new mouthpiece in the same case. Learn more about this chemical reaction that can cause silver keys to tarnish.
- Take time to get used to your new clarinet. Every clarinet feels and sounds slightly different, so it’s normal to experience an adjustment period. As you become accustomed to your new clarinet, note its tuning tendencies, ergonomics, and any quirks you might want to address with a qualified repair technician.
- Consider upgrading other accessories and equipment. You might notice that your mouthpiece or other accessories sound and feel different with a new clarinet. Consider trying new equipment to find the perfect combination to help you play confidently. Here are my recommendations for other small accessory upgrades that make a big difference.
Wishing you and your new clarinet many years of memorable music-making together!
